Lucy Calkins and her colleagues from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project have helped hundreds of thousands of teachers launch and implement rigorous and responsive reading and writing workshops. Now they have written an unprecedented curriculum for the reading workshop—Units of Study for Teaching Reading. Organized within a carefully crafted spiraling curriculum, sequential units of study model the teaching moves and language Lucy and her colleagues use to teach their students how to read with increasing sophistication and personal engagement. 4 units of Study (7 volumes) Each of the seven unit books presents a comprehensive roadmap for teaching a rigorous and responsive reading workshop, helping you plan goals, minilessons, independent reading time, share sessions, and assessment for that unit. The books are sequentially organized with each unit building on the learning from the preceding unit.

Constructing Curriculum: Alternate Units of Study Eleven alternate units provided in a slightly abbreviated format help teachers adapt their teaching to different books and reading levels, as well as create their own units of study.

A Guide to the Reading Workshop This overview volume equips you to teach a productive, well-managed reading workshop, introduces you to the methods that underlie workshop instruction, and helps you assess and address young readers’ needs.

A Guide to the Reading Workshop DVDs Two companion DVDs presents this guide’s essential understandings in a video format and show how master teachers bring the workshops structures and rituals to life in each unit of study.

Resources for Teaching Reading CD-ROM This practical CD-ROM provides print resources to support your teaching over the year as well as 22 nonfiction articles for guided and independent practice

I wanted to let you know that I just completed the “Building a Reading Life” Unit.  I have never had a more profound and inspirational moment in the classroom in my years as a teacher and Instructional Coach.  Our 5th grade students were right there, in the moment. The silence that fell on the classroom when I reread the last words of Stone Fox was stunning.  One by one the students began, “She remembers…”, “He remembers…”, they fell into a rhythm that I could have never planned.  The students easily made the transition to their “Reading Life.”  They amazed me with their reflections and insights….All of the students in today’s celebration were engaged, reflective and believed they had a reading life that was important and worth living.   Thank you.
