The Young Mathematicians at Work Series
In their Young Mathematicians at Work series, Catherine Twomey Fosnot and Maarten Dolk describe Mathematics in the City, an innovative project where teachers helped young children construct a deep understanding of number and operations in a math workshop environment. Now they and two colleagues from the project, Antonia Cameron and Sherrin B. Hersch, have developed a 21st-century approach that provides pre- and inservice teachers with an interactive video-based, digital context for inquiry into the teaching and learning of mathematics.
In their Young Mathematicians at Work series, Catherine Twomey Fosnot, Maarten Dolk, and Bill Jacob describe an innovative approach to mathematics instruction where teachers help young children construct a deep understanding of numeracy and operations in a math workshop environment that supports the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice. The hallmarks of their approach include:
- Supporting children
The first three volumes of this popular series help teachers support children’s development in number sense and operation, from addition and subtraction through fractions, decimals, and percents. Catherine Twomey Fosnot and Maarten Dolk’s signature approach uses classroom vignettes to illustrate the investigations and minilessons students engage in as they build their mathematical knowledge.
