Heinemann Number Talks Courses

Number talks serve as an excellent tools for educators to facilitate students' expression of their mathematical reasoning and foster their confidence as mathematicians. These courses equip teachers with the foundational knowledge necessary to guide these discussions, enabling students to visualize problems, execute calculations efficiently, and access a range of mathematical strategies with flexibility.

Number Talks: Whole Number Computation

Available as a 6-hour session In Person or 6, 1-hour sessions Live Online
Number talks are five-to fifteen-minute classroom conversations around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally. Session participants learn how to use the number talks routine to focus on essential numerical and procedural understandings and develop students' reasoning and fluency with fractions.

After this course, participants will be able to:

  • facilitate number talks to draw attention to students' thinking, bringing their reasoning to the forefront of the class
  • shift instruction about rational numbers from a procedure-and-rule-based focus toward sense-making and understanding
  • choose, analyze, and adjust tasks to accommodate students' varying levels of readiness
  • highlight contexts and models during number talks to develop and anchor flexible and efficient strategies for reasoning and computing with rational numbers

Number Talks: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

Available as a 6-hour session In Person or 6, 1-hour sessions Live Online
This session is a dynamic multimedia resource created for teachers who want to implement number talks but are unsure of how to begin and those with experience who want more guidance in crafting purposeful problems.

Participants will learn how to:

  • follow students’ thinking and pose the right questions to build understanding
  • prepare for and design purposeful number talks
  • develop fractional reasoning and strategies for working with fractions, decimals, and percentages
