Based on the book, Number Talks: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

Number talks are five-to fifteen-minute classroom conversations around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally. This one-day course focuses on number talks that build conceptual understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages. Participants learn how to use the number talks routine to focus on essential numerical and procedural understandings and develop students' reasoning and fluency with fractions.

Learning Goals

After this course, participants will be able to:
  • Facilitate number talks to draw attention to students' thinking, bringing their reasoning to the forefront of the class.
  • Shift instruction about rational numbers from a procedure-and-rule-based focus toward sense-making and understanding.
  • Choose, analyze, and adjust tasks to accommodate students' varying levels of readiness.
  • Highlight contexts and models during number talks to develop and anchor flexible and efficient strategies for reasoning and computing with rational numbers.
