Interactive writing supports young writers as they learn how to communicate through writing. During interactive writing, the teacher cocreates a text with the students. The teacher shares the pen with the students as students contribute to the text. Interactive writing is a highly engaging activity for students and gives them ownership of the text they are writing. Interactive writing is a powerful activity that can be used across all curriculum contexts throughout the school day.

Learning Goals

Participants will:

  • Explore the key features of an interactive writing lesson.
  • Explore how to engage students in interactive writing lessons.
  • Explore how the reading and writing process is strengthened through interactive writing.
  • Explore how to collect student data to inform instruction and teacher decision making.
  • Explore how to use The Literacy Continuum to select goals for teaching.
  • Observe video lessons and try some interactive lessons with students.

Time Requirement
