Developed by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell An overview of the key principles of reading instruction outlined in Fountas and Pinnell's bestselling Guiding Readers and Writers, this seminar provides teachers with an understanding of all of the elements of an effective literacy program, and the different models for integrating these elements into a predictable and organized routine. Customized to meet your teaching and learning needs, topics within the seminar may include reading and writing workshop, guided reading in the intermediate grades, managing the literacy block, and literature discussion groups. Course goals: Gain an overview of the three-block literacy framework for Grades 3–6 as described in Guiding Readers and Writers with a focus on reading workshop and its components: reading mini-lessons, independent reading, guided reading and literature study Work with the First Twenty Days of Independent Reading to learn how to get students thinking, talking and writing about reading independently Explore the sustaining and expanding systems of strategic actions that allow readers to think within, beyond and about text Learn the basic elements of a guided reading lesson and observe examples of guided reading in Grades 3–6 Begin to understand the supports and demands of leveled text and how to match books to readers Discuss different management and assessment tools for creating dynamic guided reading groups and planning for targeted instruction Explore the reading and writing connection with a special focus on the Reader's Notebook and how to deepen comprehension through oral and written response.
