Overview:

In this webinar series, participants will learn key strategies and skills for using digital tools and resources in meaningful and impactful ways to amplify literacy instruction across the curriculum. This three-part series will focus on setting kids up for independence and success with digital tools both in and out of the classroom, selecting high impact tools and strategies for all learners, effective instruction with digital resources, and using an inquiry stance to boost engagement and authenticity of the work we ask students to do.

Kristin and Katie will draw from their published texts Read the World: Rethinking Literacy for Empathy and Action in a Digital Age, and Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning in the K-6 Classroom, as well as new material specific to the current distance learning models due to Covid-19. Kristin and Katie will offer practical tips and strategies, address questions about your specific situation, and lead lively discussion and hands-on practice.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

SESSION 1:

  • Planning for the year, choosing tools that will maximize engagement, choice, and connections
  • Strategies and skills for helping students gain independence with digital tools
  • Structures that support students (and families!) in class and at home

SESSION 2:

  • What you need to know about digital literacy today
  • Tools and methods for shifting to blended, hybrid or distance learning instruction
  • Helping students be critical consumers of media and digital texts
  • Lessons for distance learning

SESSION 3:

  • Responding to reading using digital tools
  • Sharing learning across subjects with digital tools
  • Taking action with digital tools

Presenters

Kristin Ziemke and Katie Muhtaris are coauthors of the popular books Read the World: Rethinking Literacy for Empathy and Action in a Digital Age, and Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning in the K-6 Classroom. Through their published texts, online work, in-person workshops and consulting, they take a balanced approach to technology in the classroom with a focus on tools and strategies that will best amplify effective teaching and learning. Kristin and Katie offer a wide range of experience as classroom teachers, coaches, and leaders in the field of thoughtful educational technology in the literacy classroom.

Classroom teachers of grades K-8, instructional coaches, instructional technology teachers, curriculum coordinators, and administrators.

Tuition

The cost of this Webinar Series is $169.00 per person. If you register a group of three to nine people at the same time there is a discounted rate of $159.00 per person. When signing up ten or more participants at one time, please call in advance for large group discount pricing. Tuition also includes access to the recorded webinar sessions for up to 90 days after the conclusion of the webinar series.

Requirement

It is highly recommended that participants have a copy of Read the World: Rethinking Literacy for Empathy and Action in a Digital Age, and Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning in the K-6 Classroom. If you do not own a copy, you may purchase them online here: Read the World, and here: Amplify.

Confirmation

Participants will receive a series of email correspondence from Heinemann. The first email confirmation will serve as your receipt for the webinar series along with some general instructions on how to prepare your computer for the webinar. The second email confirmation will be sent approximately 2 days prior to each webinar date with a link to our webinar platform Zoom, directing you to the webinar class and giving you instructions on how to log in.
