Are you looking for new strategies and approaches to help your students better understand math? In this webinar, Sue O'Connell shares practical strategies that make math come alive for students. Her questioning techniques, interactive tasks, helpful suggestions, and array of resources illustrate doable ways to build math understanding. Gather ideas for strengthening your students' problem-solving skills, building their vocabularies, and enhancing their abilities to justify their thinking. Examine daily routines that develop students' number sense, and discover amazing children's literature that provides the perfect jump-start to math explorations. You will amass a wealth of classroom-ready ideas and activities to take immediately back to your classroom.

Learning Objectives

SESSION 1: Stepping Back to Let Students Do the Thinking

  • Explore the shift in K-5 math instruction from memorization to reasoning
  • Explore simple investigations that prompt math insights
  • Identify questions that prompt reflection and build student understanding

SESSION 2: Teaching Mathematics in Context

  • Make connections between abstract equations and problem situations
  • Learn strategies and tasks for strengthening students' problem-solving skills
  • Discover children's literature that sets a context for teaching math skills and concepts

SESSION 3: Promoting Math Talk

  • Experience a variety of number routines that prompt math discussions
  • Identify vocabulary tasks that strengthen students' understanding of the language of mathematics
  • Explore K-5 math resources that promote mathematical thinking

About the Presenter

Sue O'Connell has years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher, math coach, district school improvement specialist, and math speaker/consultant. Sue is the lead author of Heinemann's Math in Practice series, a grade-by-grade K-5 professional learning resource. She is also the lead author of the Math by the Book series as well as numerous other books that support the teaching of K-5 mathematics, including Mastering the Basic Math Facts in Addition and Subtraction and Mastering the Basic Math Facts in Multiplication and Division. She is the Director of Quality Teacher Development, providing on-site professional learning for teachers in schools and school districts across the country.

Who Should Participate

Classroom teachers of grades K-5, math coaches and interventionists, special educators, curriculum coordinators, and school/district administrators.


The cost of this three-part webinar series is $95.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the webinar series recording for 30 days, which begins on the date you receive the link to the final session's recording. Please note, access cannot be extended past 30 days.
