Play and language are both important learning tools for the prekindergarten child. Through play and language, they learn about their world and about themselves. Play and language are also the most important tools for early literacy learning. This four-part webinar series will help teachers understand literacy development in prekindergarten children. Teachers will explore the professional book Literacy Beginnings, 3rd Edition (Fountas and Pinnell) to learn how to support young children in the areas of language development, reading, writing, phonological awareness, and phonics.

Learning Objectives

During this webinar series, participants will:

  • Explore ways to build a community of learners
  • Explore how play engages children in authentic learning opportunities
  • Explore ways to engage children in inquiry that promote constructive learning
  • Explore early literacy learning: oral language, reading, and writing
  • Explore how children learn about sounds, letters, and words
  • Explore reading and writing as complex processes
  • Explore how to observe children to assess their learning
