Are your students journeying through reading as though they were commuters, not explorers? Have you had book clubs fade or fizzle in your classroom? Or perhaps you’ve avoided book clubs altogether, unsure about the benefits of students taking on such an endeavor.

In this three-part webinar series, Sonja Cherry-Paul and Dana Johansen share their research and experienced vision about the power of book clubs. Participants will oscillate between being teachers in this space, as well as members of a book club, in order to live this experience through the eyes of students. Sonja and Dana address ways to create a culture of reading through book clubs that extends throughout the year, how to get book clubs up and going, and strategies to support and deepen student discussion and comprehension of texts.

This webinar series, presented by the coauthors of Breathing New Life into Book Clubs: A Practical Guide for Teachers, is chock-full of their best tips for bringing joy and depth to student-led, blended-learning book clubs. Whether you are looking to breathe new life into book clubs or begin implementing them in your classroom, this webinar series will give you the insights and practical guidance needed for success.

Sonja Cherry-Paul has taught middle school English for twenty years. She is a literacy consultant who served on the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award committee for ten years. Sonja leads presentations about literacy at national conferences and provides professional development for educators on reading and writing instruction and racial literacy. She is the coauthor, with Dana Johansen, of several books, including their newest release, Breathing New Life into Book Clubs: A Practical Guide for Teachers, which informs this webinar.

Dana Johansen has taught elementary and middle school for more than fifteen years. Dedicated to the ever-expanding applications of technology in the classroom, she presents at national conferences on the use of blogs, digital texts, and flipped learning in literacy instruction. She is the coauthor, with Sonja Cherry-Paul, of several books, including their newest release, Breathing New Life into Book Clubs: A Practical Guide for Teachers, which informs this webinar.

Who should participate?

Classroom teachers of grades 3–8, literacy coaches, librarians, and administrators.


The cost of this Webinar Series is $169.00 per person. If you register a group of three to nine people at the same time there is a discounted rate of $159.00 per person. When signing up ten or more participants at one time, please call in advance for large group discount pricing. Tuition also includes access to the recorded webinar sessions for up to 90 days after the conclusion of the webinar series.


There is no book requirement; however, it is highly recommended that participants have a copy of Breathing New Life into Book Clubs: A Practical Guide for Teachers. If you do not own a copy you may purchase one from our website: Breathing New Life into Book Clubs: A Practical Guide for Teachers.


Participants will receive a series of email correspondence from Heinemann. The first email confirmation will serve as your receipt for the webinar series along with some general instructions on how to prepare your computer for the webinar. The second email confirmation will be sent approximately 2 days prior to each webinar date with a link to our webinar platform Zoom, directing you to the webinar class and giving you instructions on how to log in.
