LIVE WEBINARS:
Mastering Math Facts: Moving Beyond Memorization

Presented By Susan O'Connell
Three, 75-minute webinar sessions from 4:30pm to 5:45pm Eastern Time (ET). Please note that this webinar series is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly. Mastering basic math facts has always been a priority for elementary-level students, but our understanding of the meaning and scope of math fact instruction has changed in recent years. Rather than a focus on memorizing facts, mastering math facts encompasses an understanding of patterns, properties, and inverses. It involves the use of mental strategies and the understanding of properties and inverse operations to reach mastery. It is so much more than memorization. In this webinar, you will learn to navigate new strategies and activities focusing on both understanding and fluency. You will explore investigations, fluency games, and assessment options to replace flash cards and timed tests. You will reflect on a teaching sequence, explore connections that lead to mathematical insights, and examine mental strategies that support fluency. You will gather a game plan for transforming your teaching of math facts to extend beyond memorization and discover ways to bring confidence and mastery to your students. SESSION 1: Setting up an effective math facts program SESSION 2: Making sense of math facts to support understanding and fluency SESSION 3: Fluency practice and monitoring progress Sue O'Connell has years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher, math coach, district school improvement specialist, and math speaker/consultant. She is the author of numerous books that support the teaching of K-5 mathematics, including coauthor (with John SanGiovanni) of Mastering the Basic Math Facts in Addition and Subtraction and Mastering the Basic Math Facts in Multiplication and Division. She is the lead author of Heinemann’s Math in Practice series, as well as a forthcoming Math by the Book series (2021). She is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences, and she is the director of quality teacher development, providing on-site professional learning for teachers in schools and school districts across the country. Classroom teachers of grades K-5, math coaches and interventionists, special educators, curriculum coordinators, and school/district administrators. The cost of this three-part webinar series is $95.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the webinar series recording for 60 days.
