PREVIOUSLY RECORDED WEBINAR SERIES:

Overview

This webinar series, based on the Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition, will guide you in exploring ways to use this professional resource to link assessment to instruction, as a foundation for observing student behaviors and planning for instruction, and as a tool for learning about texts. As a part of our work together, we will view video clips to "step inside" classrooms at each grade level and look for specific evidence of teaching and learning across the curricular areas detailed in the book.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

Session 1: Introduction to Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Interactive Read Aloud and Literature Discussion

In our first session, we will begin with an overview of how Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum is organized as well as various ways to use the resource. We will consider how text selection and analysis for interactive read aloud impacts the way we support readers’ thinking within, beyond, and about the text. We’ll also take a look at how the intentional conversations we have with students in interactive read aloud scaffolds them in participating in literature discussions.

Session 2: Shared and Performance Reading, Word Study

Fountas and Pinnell define shared reading and performance reading as "instructional contexts that involve reading aloud for the pleasure of oneself and others." In this session, we’ll look at how we can use these instructional contexts to engage students in processing print, using their voices to interpret the meaning of text, learning about the reading process, and having a basis to learn about how words work. We’ll dig deeper into nine areas of learning in phonics, spelling, and word study and ways to teach students in these areas in whole group and small group settings.

Session 3: Linking Assessment to Instruction, Text Analysis, and Guided Reading

In session three we will focus on how to use Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum as a bridge to link assessment and instruction. We will analyze the demands of leveled texts and think about how to use our analysis, paired with students’ strengths and needs, to plan for instruction in guided reading. We will also view a guided reading lesson and observe how the teacher supports her students before, during, and after the read.

Session 4: Writing, Writing About Reading

Writing is a tool for learning as well as for communicating with others. In this session, we will consider various purposes, genres, and forms of writing. We will analyze students’ writing for evidence of their behaviors and understandings, and peek inside a writing workshop to see how one teacher supports her students’ growth as writers.
