An Intensive Teaching and Leadership Institute for K-12 Educators

Join us in New Orleans over the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend for a practical and personal institute with a "dream team" of nationally recognized teacher-authors.

This program helps us all step further away from the passive "curriculum of mentioning" and commit to the more engaging and challenging practice of student-directed inquiry. We elicit kids' questions and place them in the center of our thinking, aiming for high achievement and a climate of collaboration, passion, and fun.

The institute is a mix of keynote sessions, breakout workshops, and job-alike meetings. You'll spend part of each day in a group that matches your area of expertise. You'll also join a team of colleagues in a multidisciplinary inquiry project, drawing on the extraordinary sights, sounds, and history of New Orleans itself. Our watchword is curiosity. We will try out everything we want our students to experience, making the necessary translations to back-home realities.

The following strands are woven into keynote addresses, job-alike groups, and breakout workshops:

  • Content-Area Reading and Writing: Strategies to develop deeper thinking, build knowledge, and invite kids to comprehend and create complex nonfiction texts.
  • Teaching with Inquiry: Four models of student inquiry, with a ladder of ten ways to find time, get started, support, publish, and celebrate students' investigations.
  • Social-Comprehension Lessons: Explicit lessons on identity, empathy, and social skills that create friendly, collaborative and brave classrooms.
  • Just-Right Technology: Selecting and using technologies that truly amplify thinking, enhance interaction in the classroom, and help kids learn from—and teach—the world.
  • Including Everyone: Supporting English language learners, students with special needs, kids who are shy or introverted, and those who struggle.
  • Growing Upstanders: Helping kids to address real problems, build awareness, offer aid, or take action.
  • Instructional Leadership: Explore the roles of principals, coaches, curriculum specialists, and district leaders.
