Learn to Plan Interactive Read Alouds and Book Clubs to Prompt Thinking Within, Beyond, and About the Texts

When readers engage with texts, they read, think about, and discuss them in order to deepen their understanding. In this mini-course, you will examine two instructional contexts in which students have the opportunity to share their thinking with their classmates. In providing these opportunities, you not only give students the space to communicate with one another, but as the instructor, you can also gather evidence of the kinds of thinking your students demonstrate and prompt them to think even more. During interactive read aloud and literature discussion, students learn to express their thinking in ways that lead to increased understanding and the creation of a community of readers in your classroom.

For this mini-course we use The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition as our professional resource. If you do not have a copy of this text, see below for book discount information.

This mini-course consists of four multi-part sessions. Session 1 details the importance of supporting the listening and discussion skills described in the The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum across the school day. In this session you will explore the behaviors and understandings to notice, teach and support, and you will become more familiar both with how to notice what students are demonstrating, and how to support them along their growing edge. In sessions 2 and 3 you will explore interactive read-aloud as a whole group context for talking about texts, and you will use The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum to identify evidence of thinking within, beyond, and about the text during conversations. In the final session you will identify reading behaviors exhibited by students during book club discussions and share insights on the development of behaviors that support extended discussion across grade levels.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore two instructional contexts within which teachers model and provide opportunities for text talk
  • Identify reading behaviors exhibited by students as they talk about texts
  • Discuss the importance of supporting the listening and discussion skills described in The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum across the school day
