About the TCRWP Virtual Summer School Curriculum

These all-new, standards-based—and joyful—summer school units/modules were developed around what we observe to be the most important needs of students as they emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for the new school year. We offer the units in a suggested sequence, but, because we know that some schools and districts will wish to plan their own sequence, each module can be purchased a-la-carte as well. See the “Subscription Terms and Conditions” section on this webpage for more information.

About this Unit/Module

This action-packed writing unit draws kids in right from the start, creating a buzz of excitement as they share their knowledge with each other. Writers will generate ideas for their information pieces by thinking about topics they know really well. They will plan out how their pieces will go, thinking both about their overall structure, and the organization within each section, and will study informational mentor texts to get a vision for their work.

They’ll spend time doing purposeful revisions. They’ll make decisions about where to elaborate in order to show what’s most important about their topic. Writers incorporate text features such as diagrams, captions, definitions, tips, and more to really bring their writing to life. Finally, writers will work to add multiple perspectives, making sure to fact-check for accuracy along the way.

Writers will use their notes to cycle through the writing process once again, this time writing an information book about their newly researched topic. They will once again think about choosing a structure that makes the most sense, imagine where to elaborate to say more, and use text features to pop out what’s most important. Writers will write with more independence, as they raise the level of their work in this bend.
