About the TCRWP Virtual Summer School Curriculum

These all-new, standards-based—and joyful—summer school units/modules were developed around what we observe to be the most important needs of students as they emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for the new school year. We offer the units in a suggested sequence, but, because we know that some schools and districts will wish to plan their own sequence, each module can be purchased a-la-carte as well. See the “Subscription Terms and Conditions” section on this webpage for more information.

Units/Modules Included in this Grade-Level Sequence

The following are the reading/phonics and writing virtual units that comprise this subscription:

Writing about Reading and Fiction Book Clubs, Rising Grades 5/6 (21 Student Videos)

  • This unit aims to encourage readers to consider how they see themselves inside of their favorite texts, and how that shapes their perspective. As students progress through the unit, they will encounter lessons that increasingly support them through the confusing, tricky, and often complicated parts of their texts. Lessons include noting characters, jotting about unexpected details, and writing about power dynamics.

Reading Nonfiction to Grow Knowledge, Rising Grades 5/6 (22 Student Videos)

  • Throughout this unit, students read to build knowledge and to teach others, while studying topics that fascinate them. The first bend emphasizes nonfiction reading skills. In the second bend of the unit, readers participate in research clubs, diving into a shared topic with a few other readers (we recommend combining partnerships for clubs of four students). In the final bend of the unit, kids switch research topics and continue learning and practicing research skills, with more independence.

Narrative to Argument Writing, Rising Grades 4–6 (25 Student Videos)

  • The unit starts with a week of identity-rich narrative writing to help build community and usher students into the writing work. Then students will turn to writing reviews as they learn to make clear claims and to support those claims with reasons and concrete evidence. The third bend of the unit asks students to put their argument writing skills to a new job—writing about an issue that many schools are wondering about.
