Workshop:
The Nonfiction Read-Aloud: Layering Vocabulary and Concepts for Subject-Specific Study / A Virtual Mini-Workshop

Presented by Lester L. Laminack
A 90-minute virtual mini-workshop from 10:00am to 11:30am Eastern Time (ET). Please note that this virtual mini-workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly. How does the nonfiction read-aloud create opportunities to convey vocabulary and concepts for an area of study? In this mini-workshop, we will examine a set of thoughtfully selected and intentionally employed picture books to explore the art and function of read-aloud events featuring nonfiction texts. Lester will examine how text sets can be curated and layered to build content-specific vocabulary and establish a repertoire of images associated with those subject-specific words as students develop a conceptual understanding. Then he will lead us through aspects of nonfiction read-aloud experiences to demonstrate how we can lead our students on an exploration of the names and functions of text features frequently found in nonfiction texts. Lester L. Laminack is Professor Emeritus at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
