Overview

When young children are reading at the earliest levels, they spend time reading books characterized by highly patterned text with limited variety or volume of words. Consequently, we view these texts as opportunities for only decoding practice, thereby overlooking the potential for how they may playfully increase children's engagement, comprehension, fluency, and expressive language skills. In this session, Kathy Collins will share ways to "see" these books with fresh eyes to value all they can offer to our young readers' reading engagement and oral language development.

Learning Objectives

• Participants will expand the teaching content of reading conferences with early readers to include monitoring for meaning, idea development, and oral language expansion.
• Participants will create read-alouds that provide opportunities for children to monitor for meaning, grow ideas, and engage enthusiastically in conversations with early level text.
• Participants will support and teach children toward higher-level thinking and talking about any text.

About the Presenter

Kathy Collins coauthored I Am Reading with Matt Glover. She presents at conferences and works in elementary schools to help develop high-quality, effective literacy instruction. Kathy has worked closely with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, and has over twenty years of experience as an educator.

Who Should Participate

Teachers, parents, homeschoolers, and caregivers of students in grades PreK-2; literacy coaches, reading specialists, and special education specialists.

Special 2021 Tuition Fee

The cost of this virtual mini-workshop is $40.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the recorded workshop for 60 days.
