Overview

In this 90-minute virtual mini-workshop, Carl Anderson will show you how to have daily one-on-one writing conferences with your students, whether you're conferring with them in your classroom or online. You will learn how conferences can help you discover and assess what students are trying to do as writers, and then teach them what they need to learn about the writing process and the qualities of writing.

During this mini-workshop, you'll watch and analyze video of Carl conferring with students in different grade levels, and you'll read and discuss student writing samples to help you get some practice with the kind of assessment that will help you confer powerfully with students.

Also, Carl will give you tips for how to confer effectively on online platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet and how to use these platforms’ tools to make all the important conferring moves.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand why conferring is such an effective teaching method
  • Become familiar with key conferring concepts
  • Know the three parts of a writing conference and strategies for navigating each of them successfully
  • Know how to confer with students in person and online
