Date and Time

One, half-day workshop from 11:30am to 2:30pm Eastern Time (ET).

  • Thursday, May 13, 2021

Please note that this virtual half-day workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly.

As writing teachers, our ultimate goal is for students to embrace a writing identity, a writing process, and concrete writing strategies that will propel them toward confidence and independence long after they have left our classroom. In theory, excellent writing instruction makes this happen.

But what happens when we're done with theory? What does this look like in the writing lives of real students? How do we actually get students to that point? What happens after the minilessons and writing conferences disappear? How do we build transferable writing skills strong enough to stand on their own?

In this interactive, half-day workshop, we will explore practical, hands-on strategies, scaffolds, and microprogressions that will help students move toward independence in their writing—in drafting, in solving writing problems, in using mentor texts on their own to guide and inspire their work. Participants will get to try their hand at using these strategies that will be ready for use in their classrooms immediately to lift the level of student writing today and beyond!

Learning Objectives

  • Learn concrete, hands-on strategies and scaffolds to help students become increasingly independent writers in small, practical ways
  • Try strategies and discuss student examples to help the learning come to life
  • Work through microprogressions and rubrics to measure and assess students' progress toward writing independence
