Please note that this virtual half-day workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly.

Overview

Too many kids were not served by our educational practices and systems before March 2020. Many educators already knew this, others didn't have language for it and did not act, and too many weren't even willing to name it. The pandemic rendered these inequities more visible, and now, no one can say they don't see them. This school year, the goal is not to return to what was pre-pandemic. The goal is to return to better.

We must invent something more sustainable and more human for our students, and we can only do this if we collaborate and fortify ourselves against returning to the status quo. In this half-day workshop, we will ask ourselves, What outcomes do we want? What is most important? This workshop is designed for everyone to begin the efforts necessary to return to better.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify what we want for kids
  • Understand the experiences kids are bringing to school with them this year
  • Build something more responsive

About the Presenter

Cornelius Minor is a Brooklyn-based educator. He works with teachers, school leaders, and leaders of community-based organizations to support equitable literacy reform in cities (and sometimes villages) across the globe. Whether working with educators and kids in Los Angeles, Seattle, or New York City, Cornelius uses his love for technology, hip-hop, and social media to bring communities together. As a staff developer with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Cornelius draws not only on his years teaching middle school in the Bronx and Brooklyn, but also on time spent skateboarding, shooting hoops, and working with young people. Cornelius is the author of We Got This. Equity, Access, and the Quest to Be Who Our Students Need Us to Be, which informs this workshop. You can connect with him on Twitter @MisterMinor.
