Overview

During this workshop, we'll explore strategies for making craft and process studies easier to teach and be more effective for your students by troubleshooting common challenges related to these craft, process, and genre units.

Using video clips and writing samples, we'll start the day by exploring seven key reasons why choice of genre is crucial for writers. We'll examine the importance of including units that allow for choice of genre, and look at the difference between craft studies, process studies, and genre studies. You'll learn how to create a pathway for including these types of units in your year, even if you don’t think you can.

We'll troubleshoot some common issues that occur with craft and process studies, including:

  • Creating clear goals that help teachers decide what to teach day by day
  • Pulling stacks of texts, or finding alternatives when a stack doesn't exist
  • Conferring with students when they're writing in different genres

You'll learn how to design these units by actually going through the process for projecting units that allow for choice of genre. You'll start by projecting one of the possible craft studies, starting with a stack of texts and designing a whole unit, and then go on to project a process study. You'll use a protocol for examining your own process and the process of published authors to generate teaching points for a process study.

By the end of the day, you'll be equipped to design any craft or process study and use a variety of strategies to positively impact student engagement and their quality of writing.
