Mastering basic math facts has always been a priority for elementary-level students, but our understanding of the meaning and scope of math fact instruction has changed in recent years. Rather than a focus on memorizing facts, mastering math facts encompasses an understanding of patterns, properties, and inverses. It involves the use of mental strategies and the understanding of properties and inverse operations in order to reach mastery. It is so much more than memorization. In this webinar, you will learn to navigate new strategies and activities focusing on both understanding and fluency. You will explore investigations, fluency games, and assessment options to replace flash cards and timed tests. You will reflect on a teaching sequence, explore connections that lead to mathematical insights, and examine mental strategies that support fluency. You will gather a game plan for transforming your teaching of math facts to extend beyond memorization and discover ways to bring confidence and mastery to your students.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

SESSION 1: Setting Up an Effective Math Facts Program

  • Exploring the changing goals of math fact instruction
  • Highlighting an effective teaching sequence
  • Exploring the role of number sense in fact fluency
  • Identifying elements of a math fact teaching cycle that attend to both understanding and fluency

SESSION 2: Making Sense of Math Facts to Support Understanding and Fluency

  • Making connections between fact sets to deepen number sense and fluency
  • Identifying strategies and tasks for building understanding of the commutative property to expand math fact fluency
  • Identifying strategies and tasks for building understanding of inverse operations to expand math fact fluency

SESSION 3: Fluency Practice and Monitoring Progress

  • Exploring characteristics and examples of math fact fluency games
  • Managing math fact games in a diverse classroom
  • Identifying options for monitoring fact fluency
