What drives us to learn? We all want our students to be engaged learners, but we often struggle with getting them excited about and responsible for their own learning. In Engaging Children, Ellin Oliver Keene explores the question: What can we do to help students develop internal motivation or, better yet, engagement? Differentiating between compliance, participation, motivation, and engagement, she shows how to model and recognize true engagement in your classroom and help students take more responsibility for their learning.

In this webinar series, participants will learn to create the conditions that lead to engaged learning and will explore each of four pillars of engagement. Participants will use an observation tool designed to analyze engagement in their own classrooms and will discuss their findings during the second and third webinars.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

  • Discuss the differences between compliance, participation, motivation, and engagement.
  • Reflect on examples of engaged learning in their own and their students' lives.
  • Understand the seen and unseen conditions that support engagement in any classroom.
  • Become familiar with an observation instrument to study engagement in the classroom.

  • Reflect on classroom observations and discussions related to engagement.
  • Discuss two pillars of engagement: intellectual urgency and emotional resonance.
  • Consider implications for the classroom including ways to initiate conversations with students about engagement.

  • Reflect on observations from the classroom.
  • Discuss the final two pillars of engagement: perspective bending and the aesthetic world.
  • Imagine ways in which students can become increasingly independent in engaging and re-engaging in the classroom.
