Overview

Comprehension is more: more than answering a few questions after reading, more than writing a cursory summary paragraph. A nuanced understanding that is true comprehension changes the reader, the listener, and the viewer for good. How can we move past the surface-level definition of comprehension and open the gates to include multiple pathways to reach a deeper understanding?

This three-part webinar pushes back against a narrow view of what it means to comprehend, welcoming the reader's inclinations to understand through realia, art, music, movement, and conversation. We'll explore how to make comprehension visible, achievable, accessible, and incremental... all in practical ways that are ready to be implemented in the classroom, whether the learning is in person or online.

Built upon the structure of comprehension strategies, each session will begin with the concrete and make its way to the abstract. Tanny's launching lessons and her repertoire of resources will be shared, along with time built in for learning from and with each other. Join us for a journey to a deeper understanding of comprehension!

Learning Objectives

SESSION 1

  • It's the thought that counts: the role of metacognition in comprehension. How can thinking and reflection become superpowers in literacy?
  • See for yourself: visualizing. How can a greater reliance on the senses help readers to generate mental images?

SESSION 2

  • Your own World Wide Web: schema. How can we value both the new and the known? And what is the role of each in comprehension?
  • Not just anybody's guess: inferring. How can readers become skilled at figuring out what's written between the lines?

SESSION 3

  • Fuel for thought: questioning. How can a reader's own questions propel them through tough text?
  • Under the big top: determining importance. What can we do to help readers figure out what matters most?
  • Keep the change: synthesizing and summarizing. How can we teach readers how to put it all together to make lasting meaning?
