Course Objectives

  • Learn the guiding principles of the CCSS Math Practice Standards
  • Understand the 8 mathematical practices
  • Explore instructional strategies that blend content and practice
  • Recognize activities that illustrate the 8 standards
  • Experience the standards by designing tasks that support content and practice
  • Consider ways to create a classroom environment that values mathematical thinking and the application of math skills

Credit/CEUs:

On completion of this course, you will be awarded a certificate for 30 contact hours, or 3 CEUs.

Sessions for Putting the Practices Into Action: Implementing the Standards for Mathematical Practice

  1. What are the Standards for Mathematical Practice?
  2. Make Sense of Problems and Persevere in Solving Them (Standard 1)
  3. Develop Abstract Thinking and Reasoning (Standards 2 and 3)
  4. Model with Mathematics and Select Appropriate Tools (Standards 4 and 5)
  5. A Focus on Precision (Standard 6)
  6. A Focus on Structure and Repetition (Standards 7 and 8)

Each session requires approximately one hour to complete, with additional opportunities to read and reflect offline as well as to practice with students.
