Date and Time

A 90-minute virtual mini-workshop from 6:00pm to 7:30pm Eastern Time (ET).

  • Wednesday, December 1, 2021

Please note that this virtual mini-workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly.

Overview

Throughout the United States, more than 80 percent of the teaching force identifies as white. Although there are necessary efforts underway to bring additional Black, Indigenous, and educators of color back into the profession (following the loss of 38,000 Black teachers as an unintended result of Brown v. Board in 1954), those of us within the system of education must also work alongside the white teachers currently engaging with youth. This 90-minute workshop seeks to support white educators in better understanding themselves and the system in which they work, to cultivate healthy racial identity development. Together, we will confront the way in which whiteness shows up, as well as explore love-centered ways to uproot it from our bodies, practices, and institutions.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will leave with an understanding of white supremacy culture and the differences between whiteness as a harmful construct and the whiteness of our bodies.
  • Participants will engage with Dr. Janet Helms's White Identity Development Model and be able to see themselves in various positions on the model.
  • Participants will build relationship with other white co-conspirators to grow their network of loving accountability partners.
