Create a Coherent Vision for Literacy Learning: Getting Started with Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ (Grades PreK-3)

Turning a literacy vision into action requires the process of design—a plan for a system that works in a coherent way, where every component fits together in a streamlined whole to reflect a transformative vision of literacy education. Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ is a first-of-its-kind, cohesive system for high-quality classroom–based literacy instruction.

Agenda*: May 21 – 24, 2018

In this interactive four-day institute, Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell will present their vision to lift students' literacy learning through authentic experiences in reading, thinking, talking, and writing.

  • Whole-class instruction will be presented through the instructional contexts of Interactive Read-Aloud, Reading Minilessons, Shared Reading, and Phonics/Spelling/Word Study lessons.
  • Small-group instruction will be presented through the contexts of Guided Reading and Book Clubs.
  • Individual instruction will be presented through the context of Independent Reading and Conferring, and Writing About Reading.

Throughout this intensive institute, the authors will show how these instructional contexts work together to develop coherence in the literacy learning of every student across the grades.

Built into each day will be an opportunity for administrators to have a breakout session with the authors to focus on administrator and leadership needs in implementing an ambitious vision for improving student outcomes.

Learning Goals:

Participants will:

  • develop an understanding of the values and vision that underpin Fountas & Pinnell Classroom
  • develop an understanding of what reading proficiency looks like

* Agenda subject to change.
