Overview

Strategies for Improving Reading and Writing: What Matters Most

Led by Kylene Beers and Bob Probst with core faculty Chris Crutcher, Penny Kittle, and Linda Rief.

Join Kylene Beers and Bob Probst, along with their distinguished core faculty, for the third annual Pacific Coast Literacy Institute. This institute offers you the opportunity to work with colleagues and literacy experts over several days in a setting that is free from other distractions.

During this institute, you will learn methods to help you give your students the tools they need to become independent learners, and responsible readers and writers. You can help them develop into students who engage in conversations and collaborations to strengthen ideas they find in the texts they read and write.

Our specific goals include sharing:

  • Methods for encouraging engagement, building relevance, and promoting rigor
  • Strategies for close reading of fiction and nonfiction texts
  • Approaches to help students with expository and narrative writing
  • New ways of teaching vocabulary

For a real, hands-on experience, bring some of the texts you use in your own classroom with you; by immediately applying what you learn during the institute, you'll maximize your learning experience.

Topics Discussed

  • Engagement
  • Comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • New books for kids

Who Should Attend?

This institute is best-suited for classroom teachers, literacy leaders, literacy coaches, and administrators for grades 4-12. English/language arts/reading teachers, social studies, science teachers, and resource/special education teachers are encouraged to attend.

This is a great opportunity to connect and work collectively with colleagues nationwide. If you attend with others in your school or district, you'll find yourselves working toward shared goals and building a stronger team, providing an ideal opportunity to make real change happen back home.
