Overview

Led by Kylene Beers and Bob Probst, with core faculty Chris Crutcher, Penny Kittle, and Linda Rief.

Join Kylene Beers and Bob Probst, along with their distinguished faculty and evening speakers, for the 10th Annual Boothbay Literacy Retreat: Creating a Community of Readers and Writers. Each year, educators from across the country travel to Boothbay to work with colleagues and literacy experts on issues of reading and writing.

During the week, days start early and end late as we work in small and large learning communities, focusing on crucial questions. This year, we'll be guided by the following questions:

  • How do we develop responsive and responsible readers and writers?
  • Why is reading still a valuable tool?
  • How is fake news changing how we read?
  • What have we learned about teaching children in the last ten years and what do we hope guides teaching for the next decade?

Each Day...

Mornings: We begin early with a writing class led by writer-in-residence Linda Rief. After breakfast, we convene for a large group presentation led by Kylene and Bob. From there, we move to small-group conversations.

Afternoons: After lunch, we return to small groups to study closely issues including:

  • Helping struggling readers and writers
  • Developing engagement
  • Understanding best practices for tomorrow
  • Discovering tech tools that extend learning

Coffee and Conversations: In the late afternoon, we set aside time for you to do some reading or writing on your own, or talk with any of the faculty about questions you have.

Evenings: Enjoy dinner on your own in the surrounding area, but be back by 7:50 pm for our Distinguished Lecture Series, which begins each night at 8:00 pm.

At Boothbay you have the chance to:

  • Work side-by-side with your favorite authors
  • Think carefully about critical issues
  • Have small group conversations to answer your questions
  • Work on literacy plans for your district

Post-Retreat Writing Session

The retreat officially ends at noon on Wednesday. We hope, however, that many of you will decide to stay with us through Thursday at noon. On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, we offer what we call a "lagniappe" session. This New Orleans word (pronounced lan-yap) means "a little something extra."

This year's lagniappe session will focus on expository writing. In particular, we'll discuss how we help students write informational texts with voice, how we encourage reason and analysis while nurturing creativity and passion, and, most importantly, how we help all students use writing as a way of knowing.

Who Attends

If you are a teacher, a coach, or an administrator, Boothbay is for you! We’ll focus on reading and writing strategies for students in grades 4–12, though primary grade teachers tell us that everything we share is appropriate for their students, too. The strategies are most appropriate for ELA/reading, social studies, science, and special education teachers, but all educators are welcome.

This is a great opportunity to connect and work collectively with colleagues nationwide. If you attend with others in your school or district, you'll find yourselves working toward shared goals and building a stronger team, providing an ideal opportunity to make real change happen back home.
