Writing Walkabouts

The object of a writing walkabout is to walk and write, then walk and write some more. This is especially good for freshman or new kids, but it can be great for even upper classmen to see the school from a different angle. You leave the physical constraints of desks and chairs and fluorescent lights, and you go out into the world. 

As I take my class out for a writing walkabout, we walk for a while, then settle into a spot and write for fifteen or twenty minutes. Students can either describe what they see directly in front of them or describe what the place reminds them of. They can write from an exterior stance of description or from an interior stance of memory and nostalgia. 

When time is up at each space, students share what they’ve written with the person next to them. No real criticism or feedback is given. The space just absorbs the writing, and the group moves on to the next destination and repeats the process until the walkabout is finished.
