The Teacher Tip
Focus on What You Do Well
October 12, 2017
Adapted from Take Charge of Your Teaching Evaluation by Jennifer Ansbach
Our past experiences inform how we see ourselves, our students, and our surroundings. When we frame our experiences in a positive light and focus on what we do well, we see our students and ourselves more generously. When we accept a deficit model of professional development, we take on the beliefs that we are lacking in skills and require remediation—a stance that will not help us to grow or to take risks. Professional researchers are not less accomplished because there is more research to be done; likewise, we are not less competent because there are new methods and skills that we can bring to the classroom. Taking time to establish who we are as teachers gives us the benefit of the doubt when needed and helps us choose our path forward.
