Course Overview:

In this single-session course, you will learn about a hierarchy of possible goals for both reading and writing which are organized to support teacher decision-making. Throughout the session, you will be guided to think about new ways to assess to determine what students need (by utilizing existing data and/or by conducting an assessment conference). In addition to the assessment conference video, you will watch two goal-setting conferences and think about the power these conversations can have on student independence. Finally, participants get a sneak peek into one teacher's system for managing multiple goals: including scheduling, personalized anchor charts for students, and note taking. This is the first session of Jennifer Serravallo's full-length online course, Strategies in Action: Reading and Writing Methods and Content, drawing from Jen's best-selling resources The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn about arranging a hierarchy of reading goals and a hierarchy of writing goals to guide assessment and observations of students to pinpoint instructional next steps
  • Reflect upon the assessments you currently use to determine goal(s) for students, and consider new options
  • Learn about an "assessment-only conference" as a shortcut to determine goals
  • Learn about a "goal-setting conference" to guide students to reflect and set goal(s)
  • Consider ways to enhance your own system for managing multiple goals
