About the Units of Study Summer School Curriculum

These standards-based—and joyful—summer school units review key topics from the previous grade level Units of Study to prepare kids for the year ahead. These units offer the newest researched-based methods for teaching phonemic awareness, assessment-based decoding, vocabulary, knowledge generation, argument, and more. Designed specifically for teachers with a background in workshop teaching, these units will help teachers bring the responsive tools and methods they use all year long into their summer school classrooms.

This subscription is an all-digital resource that includes videotaped minilessons to help teachers launch powerful reading and writing workshops that will inspire students’ joy and confidence while accelerating their growth. Teachers may choose to use the minilesson videos to teach directly, or as professional learning to guide their own teaching of minilessons.

See the “Subscription Terms and Conditions” section on this webpage for more information.

Units Included in this Grade-Level Sequence

The following are the reading/phonics and writing units that comprise this subscription:

Reading Series Fiction (21 Student Videos)

  • This unit is built on research that shows that kids often read more when they read series—and it is through series fiction that they are most apt to become life-long readers. It also builds on the research that shows that kids benefit from explicit instruction in skills, and time to practice those skills with more and then less support. The unit is designed to dramatically increase kids’ stamina, their foundational skills, and their reading volume.

Biography Book Clubs (22 Student Videos)

  • This unit supports standards-based foundational skills. This skill-development work includes adjusting one’s reading based on purpose, reading narrative nonfiction differently than expository nonfiction, note-taking, critical reading, text synthesis, and asking and answering questions.

Information Writing from Topics of Expertise (22 Student Videos)

  • This action-packed writing unit draws kids in right from the start, creating a buzz of excitement as they share their knowledge with each other. Writers will generate ideas for their information pieces by thinking about topics they know really well. They will plan out how their pieces will go, thinking both about their overall structure, and the organization within each section, and will study informational mentor texts to get a vision for their work.
