About the TCRWP Virtual Summer School Curriculum

These all-new, standards-based—and joyful—summer school units/modules were developed around what we observe to be the most important needs of students as they emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for the new school year. We offer the units in a suggested sequence, but, because we know that some schools and districts will wish to plan their own sequence, each module can be purchased a-la-carte as well. See the “Subscription Terms and Conditions” section on this webpage for more information.

Units/Modules Included in this Grade-Level Sequence

The following are the reading/phonics and writing virtual units that comprise this subscription:
1. Using Sound Power to Read, Rising Grade 1 (22 Student Videos)

  • Using Sound Power to Read is designed to support conventional reading of CVC and CCVC words. This unit supports phonics and decoding, using word cards and white boards as well as connected decodable texts. All of this high-leverage skill work is taught using the familiar and engaging direct instruction, coaching, and community connection.

2. Writing Invitations, Rising Grade 1 (22 Student Videos)

  • This unit engages young kids to write for real-world reasons: to make signs, letters, how-to books, songs, and playful rhymes. It supports phonemic awareness and letter/sound knowledge. Research is clear that writing is one of the most potent ways for young kids to practice and develop skills at stretching out words, segmenting them, and hearing initial, middle, final sounds. Students will also work on learning and using high frequency words, coming to own those words as only a writer can, using those words to write with far more fluency and confidence.

3. Building Blocks: High Frequency Words, Phonological Awareness & Letter Formation, Rising Grade 1
5 PA units with 10 videos each, 39 HFW videos, 26 letter formation videos

  • We recommend that each day of Summer School include research-based warm-up activities that will help support kids’ phonological awareness, their knowledge of high frequency words, and their phonics skills, including solidifying their command of letters and sounds, short vowels, blends, and digraphs. Although most of the TCRWP Virtual Summer School curriculum is brand new, support for phonological awareness, for high frequency words, and for alphabet knowledge have been made available across the 2020–21 school year—and some children may have already experienced these supports. We recommend revisiting them to solidify knowledge.
