About the Units of Study Virtual Teaching Resources

To support Units of Study teachers with blended or virtual teaching, Lucy Calkins and her Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) colleagues have developed resources to be used with the print Units of Study in reading, writing, and phonics. The UOS Virtual Teaching Resources allow teachers’ time to be reserved for the more intensive parts of reading and writing workshops—assessment, conferring, small groups, feedback. Parent and caregiver videos provide additional support to kids when they aren’t with their teacher.

About the Gr. 3 Reading Units of Study Virtual Teaching Resources

Third grade reading workshop begins with Building a Reading Life. We have substituted the mentor text Indian Shoes by Cynthia Smith as an alternative to Stone Fox. This is a lovely, contemporary book of interconnected stories featuring humorous and heartwarming experiences of the characters Ray Halfmoon, a Seminole- Cherokee boy, and his Grampa. The short stories in Indian Shoes lend themselves beautifully to the character and prediction work of the unit. Series is a new unit adapted from the second grade Series Book Clubs. The idea for this Series unit is that it will support students in the foundational work of studying characters and growing ideas as well as accumulating thinking across a series. We know that series reading can help students develop a life-long love of reading and support reading with increased volume and engagement as kids move up levels of text complexity. You will discover a few new of our favorite series: Little Shaq by Shaquille O’Neal and Pinky and Rex by James Howe. As the unit develops, readers move from reading series to reading fiction books of all kinds, while keeping engagement and volume high. You will have digital access to f this unit. Mystery is available outside the core sets of units. and is one you and your kids will love. Mysteries are the perfect vehicle for teaching foundational skills that lie at the heart of engaged reading. Students leap at the chance to do the work required to “get” the mystery, following ideas across their texts, seeing cause-and-effect relationships, and predicting outcomes. And, of course, mysteries naturally push kids to infer—to notice clues and to wonder more about them. The Absent Author by Ron Roy is included in the trade book pack for this unit. We have also incorporated the mentor text Hair Love by Matthew Cherry in the virtual unit.

Created Based on TCRWP’s 2020-21 Suggested Scope and Sequence

Each year the TCRWP publishes a recommended sequence of units for the year ahead. This year the TCRWP 2020-21 Suggested Scope and Sequence reflects an awareness of the interrupted schooling that we all experienced in Spring 2020. The Virtual Teaching Resources have been developed to support TCRWP’s 2020–21 Suggested Scope and Sequence. This sequence is designed to meet teachers and students where they are and help them to quickly gain momentum in supported ways as they navigate virtual and blended environments.

The 2020–21 Suggested Sequence sometimes calls for teachers to start the year with the last unit from the previous grade and sometimes includes new units which we also call Curricular Calendar units. Access to digital versions of both those types of units will be provided with the grade-level subscriptions. In addition, the 2020–21 sequence also calls for some of the units that are available for purchase outside the core Units of Study curriculum. For details on those recommended units, please see the details provided on the Order Form under the “Additional Required Resources (Print Books)” heading.
