Date and Time

A 90-minute virtual mini-workshop from 10:00am to 11:30am Eastern Time (ET).

  • Saturday, November 13, 2021

Please note that this virtual mini-workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly.

As a reading community, during whole-class instruction we come together, learn together, talk together, and grow together. This community time—during read-aloud and minilesson time—is critical to our reading workshops.

We've learned that minilessons and read-aloud times are so much more than structures. We believe that reading workshop is truly about agency and choice, so our minilessons and read-aloud time must also be about agency and choice. It takes intentional planning on the part of the teacher to make sure that these important times of each day are purposeful and community building. For these whole-class times to meet the needs of every child, we need to know the standards, know books, and most importantly know our students.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will learn strategies for keeping whole-group reading instruction responsive and authentic.
  • Participants will explore ways that intentional literacy work is equity work; the two are not mutually exclusive.
  • Participants will learn strategies for planning in a way that is responsive to students while also honoring required standards.
  • Participants will learn how to intentionally choose books for whole-class instruction.
