Interactive writing is one of the most powerful tools we have to lift the level of writing in classrooms. This highly scaffolded practice not only helps young writers begin, but also is an invaluable way to build community. Matt will help demystify this practice and give you tips and tools to weave it across all areas of your day. In this mini-workshop, you will see examples from real classrooms, discover tips and strategies to maximize instruction, and learn how to feel confident leading interactive writing while engaging and empowering your students toward writing independence.

Learning Objectives

  • Study ways to incorporate interactive writing throughout the entire day
  • Identify key language and strategies to help lift the level of student engagement during interactive writing and the transfer to independent writing
  • Understand the importance of collaborative learning in building a strong classroom community

About the Presenter

Matt Halpern is a joyful educator who draws on years of experience as a classroom teacher and literacy coach. He is passionate about making classrooms child-centered and putting the effort and work of students at the forefront. His love for teaching social-emotional skills and literacy often combines as he is always looking for new ways to help others become the best versions of themselves. Who Should Participate

Classroom teachers of grades PreK-2, literacy coaches, reading and language arts specialists, curriculum coordinators, and administrators.


The cost of this virtual mini-workshop is $40.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the recorded workshop for 30 days, which begins on the date you receive the link. Please note, access cannot be extended past 30 days.


Registrants will receive multiple emails from Heinemann, including enrollment confirmation, which also serves as your tuition receipt and contains some basic instructions. If you have not received your confirmation email within 48 hours of your registration, please contact us at or 800-541-2086, ext. 1151. Approximately two days prior to the event date you will receive an email with the PD event's Zoom link and log-in instructions.
