Overview

Writing conferences are your most powerful moments of the teaching day because they are focused on the skills and strategies that a particular child needs. This session will support participants in examining and refining their skills as conferrers. We examine dimensions of composition growth and development as well as strategies for nudging writers forward. Using authentic video clips and writing samples, we will examine how to teach (rather then tell, remind, or correct) using a variety of mentors. Finally, we will think about how we confer differently based on the type of unit students are studying. All of the strategies explored will be applicable to conferring in person or online.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • deepen their knowledge of compositional development in young writers
  • learn how to use published picture books, teacher writing, and student writing as teaching tools in a conference
  • examine effective strategies for managing conferences both in person and online
  • learn how to confer differently in craft studies, process studies, and genre studies.
