Reading Nonfiction 101: Getting Started with the Signposts and Three Big Questions / A Virtual Mini-Workshop

Special Note: In a second Summer 2022 mini-workshop Reading Nonfiction 201: Digging Deeper, Bob and Kylene offer a deeper dive into the Nonfiction Signposts. Please choose the workshop level that is best for your professional learning needs. A 90-minute virtual mini-workshop from 10:30am to 12:00pm Eastern Time (ET). Please note that this virtual mini-workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly. In this introductory workshop, we'll explain the Notice and Note nonfiction Signposts and demonstrate how they appear in nonfiction texts. We'll also explain the Three Big Questions and discuss how to make them a part of your classroom conversations. We'll share videos and student work so you can see these scaffolds in action. This workshop is especially designed for those who are new to teaching with the nonfiction Signposts. Please bring your copy of Reading Nonfiction with you to this virtual session so we can point out specific parts of the book. If you have been teaching with these signposts and with the Three Big Questions, we suggest you join us for Reading Nonfiction 201: Digging Deeper. Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst are educational consultants who work with teachers, students, and districts across the United States and Canada. Both are secondary-certified teachers and former faculty members of universities; Kylene at the University of Houston, and Bob at Georgia State University. They have turned their research into strategies that help all readers, and especially striving readers, to reach their highest potentials. They have coauthored several books including Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction: Stances, Signposts, and Strategies. In addition, Kylene is the author of When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do and Bob is the author of Responses and Analysis. Both have received national leadership awards, held national positions for educational organizations, and provided many keynotes for national and international groups. Known for their ability to blend their research with practical tools and their long-standing dedication to equity in education, their workshops enlighten and encourage as well as entertain. Classroom teachers of grades 4-12, literacy coaches, reading and language arts specialists, social studies and science content specialists, curriculum coordinators, and administrators. The cost of this virtual mini-workshop is $49.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the recorded workshop for 30 days, which begins on the date you receive the link.
