Date and Time

A 90-minute virtual mini-workshop from 10:00am to 11:30am Eastern Time (ET).

  • Saturday, March 27, 2021

Please note that this virtual mini-workshop is scheduled for Eastern Time (ET). If you are in a different time zone, please plan your schedule accordingly.

Overview

Janelle W. Henderson asks: "What lies has white supremacy taught you? What has it stolen from you? How do you honor your own brilliance and talents in a world telling you that you ain't good enough and don't belong? How do you love yourself when the world has taught you to hate yourself? That Blackness in its very existence is wrong?"

In this interactive session, Janelle will share how to use radical self-care as a tool to see how you center whiteness, speak to yourself and others, show up in the world, and take time for rest. Drawing upon Audre Lorde's definition of self-care as an act of self-preservation, she will also share how specific white-centering ideologies stop us from living our fullest lives and invite us to reclaim our lives, through rest, reflection, and routines. Note: This is a Black-centered and affirming space. Non-Black co-conspirators are welcomed.

Learning Objectives

  • Review specific white-centered ideologies (including capitalism, respectability politics, and comparison/upholding hierarchies) and the lies they teach us
  • Reflect, through journaling, drawing, and meditation, on how those ideologies permeate our individual lives
  • Construct tangible next steps and routines to interrogate your inner white supremacist to fully reclaim your life and practice radical self-care

About the Presenter

Janelle W. Henderson was born and raised and is teaching third grade in Louisville, Kentucky. She's a thirty-five-year-old mama of over twenty-five plants; a lover of Megan the Stallion, Lizzo, and Beyonce; a yogi; a hiker; a writer; and an occasional singer. Pre-COVID, students at her school knew her as the lady with the multicolored hair who runs the two book clubs she founded at the school, Black Girl Magic Book Club and Black Boy Joy Book Club. Both book clubs featured "own voice" texts and provided a space for students, in kindergarten and third grade, to engage with culturally relevant books that affirmed the diversity of the Black experience. She has coauthored articles in Reading Teacher and Urban Education. An alumnus of the National Council of Teachers of English's Professional Dyads and Culturally Relevant Teaching (Cohort 2) and Heinemann Fellows (Cohort 3), Janelle believes in creating an identity-driven, Black-affirming, and centered classroom co-constructed with her Room 112 students and their families.
