Overview

Drawing from Jen's bestselling resources on the teaching of reading and writing: Understanding Texts & Readers; The Reading Strategies Book; The Writing Strategies Book; A Teacher’s Guide to Reading Conferences; and her forthcoming book about teaching writing in small groups, this virtual workshop will help you to become adept at assessing and teaching to support students through conferences and small group instruction.

You'll explore practical ways to identify goals so that every small group and conference is of maximum impact, learn how to determine which strategies will make the most difference to student growth, and study choices for methods of teaching to work with efficiency and power.

The majority of this virtual workshop will be spent exploring options for teaching—whether in person or online—with a focus on making choices based on purpose. Each conference and small group type you study will be accompanied by a video example to show, not just tell. With an emphasis on practicality, you'll be able to put what you learned into action immediately.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Learn practical ways to identify student goals and choose just-right strategies for your learners
  • Understand the critical role of feedback, and become comfortable with supporting student practice
  • Learn a variety of different structures and forms for individual and small group instruction, each with its own purpose, and understand how to use these structures in person and online
  • Explore essential and practical organization, management, and note-taking options, whether working with students in-person or virtually
