Overview

Are you looking for ways to help students see the math that is all around them? Join Sue O'Connell to explore a wealth of children's literature that sets a perfect context for Grades 3-5 math investigations. Discover read alouds specific to this grade range that show math in action and inspire students to explore mathematics through the story events.

You'll gather ideas for selecting just the right stories to connect to your grade-level standards, as well as examine a variety of story-based math activities that incorporate models, investigations, and lots of math talk, and challenge students' mathematical thinking.

Join Sue to gather tasks, tips, and resources to link children's literature to your math teaching.

  • Gather ideas for designing math lessons that begin with a story and end with deep math understanding
  • Examine a variety of story-related math explorations, problems, and interactive practice tasks
  • Discover the power of children's literature to bring context, curiosity, inquiry, and fun to your math lessons

About the Presenter

When it comes to the world of education, Sue O'Connell has done just about everything. She's been a classroom teacher, a reading specialist, a math coach, and a school improvement specialist. Currently, Sue is a popular and well-known author and consultant who presents informative and practical workshops all around the United States. She is the lead author of Heinemann's Math in Practice series and the new Math by the Book series. She is also the coauthor of a variety of books, including Putting the Practices Into Action; Mastering the Basic Math Facts in Addition and Subtraction; Mastering the Basic Math Facts in Multiplication and Division; and Introduction to Problem Solving.

Who Should Participate

Classroom teachers of grades 3-5, math coaches and interventionists, reading specialists, library media specialists, special educators, curriculum coordinators, and school/district administrators.

Special 2021 Tuition Fee

The cost of this virtual half-day workshop is $60.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the recorded workshop for 60 days.

Confirmation

Registrants will receive multiple emails from Heinemann, including enrollment confirmation, which also serves as your tuition receipt and contains some basic instructions. Approximately two days prior to the event date you will receive an email with the PD event's Zoom link and log-in instructions.
