Honoring Young Learners: A Workshop to Activate Justice-Oriented Curriculum in Your Classroom / A Virtual Half-Day Workshop

This session rests on foundational understandings within the research on childhood development, as well as action-research created in partnerships with teachers in the classrooms of today. Here, learning designs are underscored with the idea that kids are more than ready to grapple with happenings in the world around them, and that kids learn best when their educators empower them as co-designers of their curriculum and community, so that they can achieve a rich, critical and authentic learning experience. When immersed in community care with ample opportunity for questions, reflections, and creativity, we know that kids thrive and communities shift toward greater love and understanding, which provides a sound base for the flexible, humane leadership kids need for our tomorrow. In this action-planning workshop, participants will have an opportunity to apply their learning from the foundations of childhood development, social justice, and curriculum design to their own role and context.

Individually or in teams, participants will work through their contextual lenses to consider one or more of the three pathways toward justice-oriented learning designs through their own role and community, engaging in a real-time planning workshop to be implemented in multiple contexts. The Pathways introduced in Session One are as follows:

Three Pathways for Honoring Kids Through Justice-Oriented Curricular Design:

  • The Inquiry Based Model: What To Do When Kids Serve You Hard Information
  • Negotiating Curriculum: Intentionality in Deepening Critical Literacy Within and Across Curriculum
  • Preventing and/or Responding Appropriately to Harm: When Personhood Within Your Community is Attacked

Essential Questions

  • How do we teach young learners about class, gender, race, and other nuanced topics?
  • How do we design and apply learning experiences for young people that honor their personhood and their community?
  • How do we design curriculum through a justice-oriented inquiry-based model?

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how to design honest, justice-oriented learning experiences, enacting children as co-owners of the curriculum.
  • Learn the connections between research-based childhood development, developing curriculum in accordance to grade-level standards, and responsive inquiry practices.
  • Create a justice-oriented learning design to be applied within their own community. This "takeaway" will take shape in multiple forms, such as a lesson plan, a meeting agenda, a Read Aloud plan, a sketch for a class-community action plan or project, or activities designed for learning alongside colleagues.

About the Presenter

Kass Minor is an inclusive educator and community organizer who is deeply involved in local, inquiry-based teacher research and school community development. Alongside partnerships with the University of Chicago, Teachers College Inclusive Classrooms Project and the New York City Department of Education, since 2004, she has worked as a teacher, staff developer, adjunct professor, speaker, and documentarian. Along with her partner and husband, Cornelius Minor, she established The Minor Collective LLC, a community-based movement designed to foster sustainable change in schools, redefining what it means to develop affirming, welcoming school culture and instructional practice through the lens of racial justice, decolonization, and liberation. Her work has been featured in the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, KQED Mindshift, Parents Magazine, and Nice White Parents, a podcast from Serial Productions and The New York Times. Who Should Participate

Classroom teachers of grades PreK-6, caregivers, school social workers, counselors, teaching assistants, pre-service teachers, paraprofessionals, and school leaders.


The cost of this virtual half-day workshop is $60.00 per person. Tuition also includes access to the recorded workshop for 30 days, which begins on the date you receive the link. Please note, access cannot be extended past 30 days.
