This practical, virtual hands-on workshop answers hard questions raised by concerned teachers across the country: How can I make sure my students are truly engaged in learning and feeling they have genuine choices, agency, and ownership? At the same time, how can I guarantee that my kids understand the content of social studies, science, math, language arts, and the rest? How can I get them productively engaged in researching authentic issues and events? And how can I make all this happen in a classroom atmosphere of curiosity, collaboration, and caring?

Teachers have always known that getting kids "hooked" on a topic is one key to successful learning. Recent brain research confirms that curiosity is a definable and sustainable state of mind. When our curiosity is evoked, we feel energized, think more clearly, and work harder. In short, when students are interested, they learn more and better. So, in the face of today's realities, how do we make school relevant and interesting for our students, whether they're in classrooms with us or learning at home?

In this virtual workshop, Smokey will directly involve you in a series of lessons that enact key strategies of content-area literacy and project-based inquiry learning. You'll see how kids can think better around challenging topics, and how they can use close reading and collaborative writing as tools for exploration in any subjects. Our goal is to help kids engage deeply in big ideas, build lasting knowledge, and ultimately, act wisely as citizens. Come with your teaching questions in hand; leave with ideas you can use right away.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn ten ways to move from "coverage" toward content-area inquiry

  • Experience powerful nonfiction written strategies
  • Join in explicit lessons on student collaboration
  • Explore "leaning into a crisis," and teaching for joy in times of challenge
  • Gather practical methods to scaffold students up a ladder of increasingly complex texts and topics, and to meaningfully assess that work
