I Am Reading: Nurture Young Children as They Make Meaning and Joyfully Engage With Any Book

Overview

When young children interact with books before they can read conventionally, some important questions arise:

  • Are they really reading or not?
  • What are they doing as they look at the pages?
  • What can we do to support their reading and language development?
  • How can we nurture their healthy and resilient reading identities?

In this workshop, Kathy and Matt will use video, classroom examples, and transcripts to provide answers to these questions and more. Kathy and Matt will begin by showing you how young children's interactions with any book count as real reading and denote a precious time in their reading lives, whether or not they can read the words. When we view children as readers and nurture what they're doing before they can read conventionally, we're helping them develop healthy reading habits and identities as well as a disposition toward meaning making and joyful engagement with all books.

One of the challenges teachers face when they sit beside young children as they explore books is figuring out what to say based on what they see. Kathy and Matt will share with you practical and replicable ideas for interacting with young children in ways that nudge them to think deeply and talk more about their books. They'll show how to support children's independence with books and identities as readers. Finally, Kathy and Matt will show how to create classroom conditions and provide literacy opportunities that are inviting, child-centered, and considerate of all young children, no matter who they are as readers or what they can do with books.

  • Expand the definition of what it means to read and to be a reader
  • Observe and name the wide range of meaning-making strategies young children use as they read
  • Understand how children approach familiar, unfamiliar, and informational books
  • Learn how to support young children's language expansion and elaboration as they read
  • Create conditions that encourage children towards independence and intention as they read
  • Provide tailored instruction to nudge children's meaning-making intentions and language use

About the Presenters

Matt Glover is a well-known educator, author, and presenter. With over 20 years’ experience as a teacher and a principal, Matt travels around the world, speaking about supporting the intellectual growth and development of students. Matt is the author of several books, including Engaging Young Writers, and I Am Reading (co-authored by Kathy Collins), which informs this workshop.

Kathy Collins coauthored I Am Reading with Matt Glover. Kathy presents at conferences and works in elementary schools to help develop high-quality, effective literacy instruction. She has worked closely with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, and has over 20 years’ experience as an educator.

Tuition

The cost of this workshop is $249.00 per person. If you register 3 or more participants at the same time the cost is $239.00 per person.
