Workshop developed by Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell and presented by Fountas and Pinnell-endorsed consultants

In this one day workshop, you'll explore the eight continua which comprise The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition: A Tool for Assessment, Planning, and Teaching. These eight continua are:

  • Interactive Read-Aloud and Literature Discussion
  • Shared and Performance Reading
  • Writing About Reading
  • Writing
  • Oral and Visual Communication
  • Technological Communication
  • Phonics Spelling and Word Study
  • Guided Reading

During this workshop, you'll explore The Literacy Continuum as a powerful link that connects assessment to instruction. There has never been a more comprehensive resource available to teachers that does what The Literacy Continuum does—provide specific behaviors and understandings that are required at each grade level for each continua. These behaviors and understandings describe what students will be expected to do in order to effectively read, write, and understand texts.

As a part of this workshop, you'll delve into how to use The Literacy Continuum to construct a common vision for student achievement that effectively and efficiently engages all students in the robust, authentic, and meaningful literacy learning very child deserves.

You'll also examine The Literacy Continuum for ways to look for specific evidence of learning from prekindergarten through eighth grade across all instructional contexts. You'll learn how each instructional context contributes substantially, in different but complementary ways, to students' development of the literacy process.
