Speaker Profile

Jo Anne Vasquez has been a classroom teacher, district science specialist, adjunct professor of science education at Arizona State University (ASU), and director of professional development and outreach for ASU's Center for Research on Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (CRESMET). She joined the Helios Education Foundation in 2008 where she was Vice President of Educational Practice. Currently she is a STEM Education Consultant and Professional Development provider and the Senior STEM Consultant for ASU's International Division. A graduate of Northern Arizona University, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Master's in Early Childhood Education and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction.

A recognized leader in science education, Vasquez is the Past President of the National Science Teachers Association, and the National Science Education Leadership Association. She was a Presidential Appointee to the National Science Board, the governing board of the National Science Foundation, becoming the first K-12 educator to ever hold a seat on this prestigious board. Her distinguished service and extraordinary contributions to the advancement of science and STEM education at the local, state and national levels has earned her numerous awards: the 2014 National Science Education Leadership Award for Outstanding Leadership in Science Education, the 2013 National Science Board Public Service Award, and the 2006 Robert H. Carlton Award for Leadership in Science Education, which is NSTA's highest award. She also has received the Distinguished Service to Science Education Award, the Search for Excellence in Elementary Science Education and Supervision Award, and the 2007 New York Academy of Science Willard Jacobson Award.

Vasquez is coauthor (with Michael Comer and Cary Sneider) of STEM Lesson Essentials, Grades 3-8: Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and (with Michael Comer and Joel Villegas) of STEM Lesson Guideposts: Creating STEM Lessons for Your Curriculum.
