Speaker Profile

Carl Anderson is one of the nation's leading experts on teaching writing to students in grades K–12. He dedicates his energies exclusively as an education consultant and writer.

Most recently, Carl has been in the forefront of helping teachers learn how to teach writing online. He has been showing teachers how to run synchronous and asynchronous online writing workshops, and demonstrating how to confer with students on digital platforms. Carl has also been teaching his own online classes for children.

As he has for the past two decades, Carl continues to focus his writing and work with teachers on how to confer with student writers. His most recent book, A Teacher's Guide to Writing Conferences, is part of Heinemann's Classroom Essentials series. Full of classroom video, the book helps teachers understand why conferring is so important, the underlying principles of conferring, and strategies for navigating these essential and challenging conversations with students. A Teacher's Guide to Writing Conferences builds on Carl's classic book, How's It Going? A Practical Guide to Conferring with Student Writers.

As a national consultant, Carl works with schools, districts and educational organizations around the world. He is known for his keynote speeches and courses at writing institutes as well as for his presentations at national conferences. In addition to conferring, Carl speaks about how to assess students as writers and give them meaningful feedback, as well as how to use mentor texts to teach the craft of writing. Carl is currently writing a book about teaching with mentor texts slated to be published by Heinemann.

Since 1994, Carl has been working as a staff developer for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, and spends many days each school year working with teachers in the Project's extensive network of schools in New York City.

Carl taught in elementary and middle schools in the Bronx, New York, Bardstown, Kentucky, and Northbrook, Illinois.

And Carl is also the author of Assessing Writers and the series Strategic Writing Conferences: Smart Conversations that Move Young Writers Forward Grades 3–6.
