Through this interactive session focus, participants will explore how to meet the individual needs of students during guided reading instruction. Participants will engage in activities that will help them identify student strengths and needs through the use of observation and running records. Participants will practice observing students and determining teaching decisions based on their observations. Learning from each session will be directly applied through work with case study students in between session sessions.

Learning Goals

Participants will:

  • Explore how to plan for more effective guided reading lessons.
  • Explore how responding to teaching will guide teaching decisions.
  • Explore how to assess and manage dynamic guided reading groups over the course of the year.
  • Learn how to monitor student progress over time through observation and running/reading records.
  • Learn how to analyze books using Ten Text Characteristics.
  • Develop a working knowledge of reading as a complex process.
  • Use Guided Reading Responsive Teaching Across the Grades, 2nd Edition as a resource.
  • Use The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum as a tool to observe, teach for, and support effective behaviors during guided reading instruction.

Time Requirement
